The festival received international status in 1970.
The 42nd VGIK International Student Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Presidential Grants Fund, and the National Fund of Rightholders. The main goal of the festival is the recognition and encouragement of young talents. Over the years, the winners of the VGIK Festival have become people who have become iconic figures in world cinema: Andrei Konchalovsky, Andrei Tarkovsky, Vasily Shukshin, Nikita Mikhalkov, Vadim Abdrashitov, Pyotr Buslov, Boris Akopov, Alexander Khant and others.
The festival is held in two stages: October 17 - 28, 2022 - the first stage - the VGIK competition. November 14 - 18, 2022 - the second stage - international film and theater competitions. Film works by students from Great Britain, Italy, USA, France, Germany, China, Brazil, Argentina and other countries are presented to the jury and the audience.
Along with the film festival, the 18th Theater Festival will be held. It will feature performances by leading Russian and foreign theater universities.
